I believe that each life is a story, and each story, by its very nature, must involve revelations and epiphanies, a consciousness that accompanies such periods of awareness, an ensuing conflict, and then an attempted resolution of that conflict. Joseph Campbell called it "the hero's journey," the archetypal, universal trip we all must take, and it's telling is the making of all great literature. For most of us, the process is long, hard, and often incomplete; it is Dante's journey, the devout Christian waiting for salvation; it is a Theravada monk on the long, learned rode to enlightenment; it is the victim of child-abuse, re-discovering his long-lost self. Spiritually or psychologically, the trip seems necessary and inevitable, if not painful and arduous. |
