The sputter and spit of the fiery pit
With a snarling flame of red,
As the hot coals glow
From the bellows that blow
In the blacksmith's humble shed.
A-rat-a-tat-tat, a-rat-a-tat-tat,
A-rink-a-dink-dink ado,
Is the sound that is heard
With never a word
For the likes of me or you.
The hiss of a cat from the water vat
As the iron cools to blue:
The steam and the smoke,
The grate and the poke,
The soot of the chimney flue.
The sweltering heat and the rhythmic beat,
The shower of sparkling steel;
The clash and clamor
Of anvil and hammer -
An ode to an ancient spiel.
