The famous Shroud (proeclarissima sindone)in which Jesus was wrapped when he lay in His tomb was originally preserved in a silver casket, now stored in a climate-controlled vacuumed glass enclosure. The Holy see, although not officially having authenticated the cloth, has taken it for granted and is venerated as a Holy Relic and Icon. This inverted image is like a photographic negative. The lights and shadows are natural.

The new testament has been studied and the match between the words, weapons and wounds consistently match the wounds on the Shroud and were made by weapons used by the Romans in a crucifixion. The biblical evidence follows:

The Shroud is mentioned in all four Gospels. In 1946 Father Edward Wuenschel, C. Ss. R., published two articles in Biblical Studies. These articles were the result of extensive reasearh into the Biblical aspetc of the Passion. Father Louis Hartman, C. Ss. R., and Father W. Barry, C. Ss. R., assisted him. Their conclusions were that there is no contradiction between the Sacred Scriptures of the four Gospel accounts and the Shroud, nor was there any discepency between historical Jewish burial customs of Christ's time. The testemony of Scripture supports the existence of the burial cloth of Jesus.

"Joseph, taking the Body, wrapped it in a linen cloth." (Matthew 27:59)

"And Joseph brought a linen cloth, and took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb." (Mark 16:46)

"And taking Him down, he wrapped Him in fine linen, and laid Him in a sepulcher that was hewed in stone, wherein never yet any man had been laid." (Luke 23:53)

"They, therefore, took the Body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths.' (John 20:40)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Holy Shroud was found by St. Peter and St. John laying in the empty tomb after the Resurrection. They guarded the cloth and kept it hidden.
John 20: 8-9. the disciple looked into the tomb, we hear that he " saw and believed," yet he didn't understand about the Resurrection. The suggestion is that John took the Shroud for safekeeping.
The Bible promises:
"...if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead lives in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also make alive your mortal bodies by His Spirit that lives in you." - Romans 8:11
The gospel of John describes the piercing of Jesus' side and describes the sudden flow of blood and water.
Deposition of the Cross: Gospel Synopsis
Matthew 27, 57 - 61
57:"When it was evening there came a rich man from Arimathes, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus.
58: "He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him.
59: "And Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud,
60: "and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn in the rock; and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed.
61: "Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there; sitting opposite the sepulchre."
Mark 15, 42 - 47
42: "And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,
43: "Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the Kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.
44: "And Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead.
45: "And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph.
46: "And he brought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud, and laid him in a tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.
47: "Mary Magdalene and Mary the Mother of Joses saw where he was laid."
Luke 23, 50 - 56
50: "Now there was a man named Joseph from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man,
51: "who had not consented to their purpose and deed, and he was looking for the Kingdom of God.
52: "This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
53: "Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud, and laid him in a rock-hewn tomb, where no one had ever yet been laid.
54: "It was the day of Preparation, and the sabbath was beginning.
55: "The women who had come with him from Galilee followed, and saw the tomb, and how the body was laid;
56: "then they returned, and prepared spices and ointments. On the sabbath they rested according to the commandment."
John 19, 38 - 42
38: "After this Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him leave. So he came and took away his body.
39: "Nicodemus also, who had at first come to him by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pound's weight.
40: "They took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.
41: "Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb where no one had ever been laid.
42: "So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, as the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there."
JESUS IS GONE FROM THE TOMB:
Luke 24, 12
12: "But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened."
John 20, 1 - 10
1: "Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.
2: "So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him."
3: "Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb.
4: "They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first;
5: "and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.
6: "Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying,
7: "and the napkin,* which had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself.
8: "Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed;
9: "for as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.
10: "Then the disciples went back to their homes."
* This napkin was the Sudarium of Oviedo. In Jewish burial customs a small cloth napkin was placed over the face and about the head of the burried man. The same blood stains on the cloth were found on this napkin. This placement of the cloth on the head was out of respect for the deceased, especially if there was damage or injury.
The Sudarium has a different history from the Shroud. It is kept at the Cathedral of Oviedo, Spain since the middle of the eighth century! There is also an extensive study done on this cloth napkin linking it to the Shroud. Interestingly it was mentioned in John's Gospel.
