Sailor Moon, woman oriented?
by Victoria Medley (Age: 20)

One day I was typing up the history of Sailor Moon for a website when I realized something: Men have almost no roles at all in the world of Sailor Moon. Now, this can be argued, because Mamoru DOES play an important role, and so do many other male characters, but that's not what I mean exactly.

Consider the following:
The Silver Millenium is based upon a matriarchyl society. From the evidence shown in the manga and anime, only women held any sort of power except for on Earth. The fact that Princess Serenity might have had a father is not even mentioned or touched upon. It is also understood that only the daughters of the moon may control the Silver Crystal. The ONLY males to hold any sort of power come from Earth. The ironic thing about this fact is that Earth was the planet that didn't belong to the Silver Millenium. Imagining it, I can see the trouble. A queen who thinks that men are inferior trying to place treaties with a king who thinks that women are inferior. It just wouldn't work at all. The role of men in the Moon Kingdom isn't ever suggested, so it's left to wonder if they played much of a role at all.

*shrugs* Just something I noticed. ^.^

Naoko Takeuchi said that this story is meant to bring my feelings, and the feelings of girls. It only stands to reason that it would center on the feminine, even a "divine feminine" paradigm. It is true that the male characters are mostly stick figures, but with a preponderance of shows dedicated to boys, I have no problem with that.

On the side of the good guys, we have Mamoru, Motoki, and Mamoru/Endymion's Generals, who are the bad guys of the first season because they have been warped by Beryl-sama. The show plays on the fact that there are things about the Feminine that redeem the Masculine, though it does go both ways, and the show is decidedly skewed to the former. But again, how many "white knights rescuing damsels in distress" stories are there?

I assume that men played some role on the moon. Where else did they get babies from?
Seriously though, you bring up some very interesting points.

I never noticed that. Very good point. But maybe, just maybe, there are boy parts that are so BIG that she didn't see any need to make anymore?...

No, I didn't mean to make it sound like Naoko Takeuchi was sexist. ^.^; Not in the least. I was merely trying to point out the irony of the situation that was presented within the story. Earth was centered around male beings, the moon around females, and they were at war. In fact, I think Naoko is brilliant for being able to set up everything so perfectly. Not a single name, item, or color was put in without some kind of hidden meaning. The end result of the clashing of the two worlds was complete and total restruction. Naoko could be merely trying to teach a lesson to the public, maybe even speaking out against society for holding one sex superior to another.

I don't understand.

I don't think it was meant to be that way. and in a way it's not exactly sexist at all. Naoko was a girl, and sailor moon was HER fantasy, I mean come on, if you were to create a character (a main character) it would probably be a girl! Anyway I know for sure that she didn't mean it to be interperated that way because guys play very important roles. (I kinda thought it was sexist for a while because the guy always came to rescue the girls when they were in trouble!). Besides serena has a father on earth!
