I've always been different,
in one way or another.
The way I talk and dress,
has always been "other".
My opinions are strong,
and my beliefs are my own.
But it often sets me apart,
and keeps me feeling alone.
I never fit in at school,
where the Christian kids dominated.
I was a Jew and not normal,
something to be converted and hated.
I never fit in at temple,
with blonde hair and blue eyes.
My mother's crime so easily seen,
the German she married despised.
In a world where my ideas,
were scorned and set aside.
I found within myself,
my own rules to abide.
Always listen to the heart,
for it holds the very soul.
And when you feel alone,
it will forever console.
Never ever hold grudges,
for they control the mind.
They only lead to more grudges,
and in fury they blind.
Ignore the sharp stinging,
of the stones that are thrown.
For if you withstand the enslaught,
your courage is shown.
Keep your chin up through it all,
and always wear a smile.
Give them a wink, a kind word,
and go out in style.
For you must always remember,
the problem is not me.
It is the world that is ignorant,
that can't view reality.
People are different in many ways,
from the colors of skin to religion.
While we may argue that we are right,
this battle is one that none will win.

This poem has special meaning to me, because I wrote it in a moment of anguish after being scorned openly for a belief. The fact that people can't even respect someone else's opinion is beyond me. If everyone in the world took the time to learn about eachother, study how other religions, countries, etc work and live, than we would be able to get along so much better. Most of the time two groups are almost exactly the same in their beliefs, yet they don't realize this because they're too busy fighting. Ignorance causes wars and blood shed. Don't be ignorant, learn about people before you judge them.
