Words are free when they come from me
stop the presses inside stresses
writer takes the call just down the hall

Whining engines in the street people meet
Feeling all is for naught pride and soul bought
body beautiful old man owns her body and soul

editor slams my name this stuff is lame
sheets thrown in a heap what is sleep
dead line come and gone man this wrong

truth crosses the page sixteen is her age
guy is forty five just barely alive
rape is the word used headline is "drug induced"

mother weeps on the phone she is finally home
supper meal I upchuck this assignments just my luck
finally a star dies with child in local bar

Editor smiles last edition hits the streets
I go home my kids to meet
wrap my arms around tight kiss each goodnight

Hey, the words are free when they come from me!
vision, ethics, journalistic code, political bull

Pick up your paper
Read the thrill
Call the call
Give a tearless wail
A child was hurt
But is not mine
Thank God
Turn the page
Or go to last
Front page is forgot
The poets' words
Ring on and on and on

I can't believe this poem only got 3 other comments! I thought it was incredible. It get progressively more and more scattered and frantic just like a reporter as the deadlines approach. You did a wonderful job baring the ugly fact that editors thrive on devestationg news no matter what it may mean for the victims. This is a harsh and dangerous time for the people of the world, a reporters are stuck right in the middle trying to get the dirtiest of the dirt. Wonderful write Walt!!
