The Coyote Legend { A Popular Legend Among the Navaho}
by Janet Owenby
copyright 06-30-2003

Age Rating: 7 to 127

Authors Note: In my poem I decided to allow the Coyote to be the narrator.

Awaking from my winter den,
to walk among the native men.
Across the hills my laughter rings,
warning signs the coyote brings.

Bearing a message on my back,
seeking the chosen warrior's track.
Spirits are sending him a sign,
ensuring his path crosses mine.

Encounter the man facing north,
sending his evil greeting forth.
Encounter the man facing south,
pouring his blessings from my mouth.

The Gods he wishes to appease,
humbled before me on his knees.
Offering me his sacrifice,
praying the morsel will suffice.

Brief History:

The legend of the coyote is a popular spiritual belief among the Navaho tribes. The coyote is believed to be the messenger among the Gods. A coyote crossing a man's pathway when he is facing north is believed to be delivering evil greetings. However, a man encountering a coyote when he is facing south is believed to be the recipient of good news. If the message being delivered institutes bad news, the man offers the coyote a sacrifice to avoid evil befalling his family. A coyote delivering good news is rewarded with a sacrifice and the man's family receives the Spirits' blessing.

Terrific fable. Aesop would be proud. You did a great job in looking at the world through the eyes and perspective of an animal. I loved it Janet.
Warm regards,
Gregory

I forgot to mention, that was a great angle in allowing your poem to speak from the coyote's
point of view!
