Beauty is a treasured thing, given far too much import;
we emphasize external kinds – but there’s another sort -
the kind that shines from deep within - the beauty of the soul.
No diet, vitamin or gym will help one reach that goal.
Blessed be the beholder who perceives that special glow -
someone who sees beyond our flesh and takes the time to know
our strengths and vulnerabilities - our sins and righteousness,
who looks within, way past our skin and is still in love with us.
One day we’ll age, our facades fade, we’ll wrinkle and we’ll smell,
and only those who've loved us true, will "hang in" 'til the bell.
So when the Reaper comes to call and set our spirits free,
let’s pray some beauty here inside will please their memory.

"How could anybody confuse truth with beauty, I thought as I looked at him. Truth came with sunken eyes, bony or scarred, decayed. Its teeth were bad, its hair gray and unkempt. While beauty was empty as a gourd, vain as a parakeet. But it had power. It smelled of musk and oranges and made you close your eyes in a prayer." ~Janet Fitch
That quote is from the novel "White Oleander" by Janet Fitch, my obsession.
The poem you wrote is true, but almost nobody in this world today really cares about inner beauty anymore. It's beauty that pays the bills. The beautiful people acheive the money, live the "good life". The "ugly ones", with the inner beauty, are in todays society all of us in the middle class, luggng around with calloused hands and scarred faces. The beautiful are those we worship today, sadly enough.
I can feel old age creeping up too fast and can only hope that others will look past the outer facade and into the inner reaches of my heart and soul. Wonderful write, Lyle.

There is no escaping the inevitable...old age. It will find everyone of us regardless of our fancy diets and health food. This is a great reminder of our mortality. very nice job Lyle.
