Memories Of A Poor Man's Love
She pulls into her old homestead,
and memories rush through her head.
She peeks through a wooden door crack,
and sees the reason she came back.
She sees forgotten ghost appear,
and wipes away a fallen tear.
Kids finger paint on peeling walls,
and laughter rings through creaky halls.
Husband places her hand-stitched quilt,
in a wooden cradle he built.
She watches his eyes fill with pride,
as he lays their angel inside.
She sings her mother's lullaby,
to soothe her newborn baby's cry.
Sweet sound of her husband's fiddle,
softly plays a childhood riddle.
She repeats a mother goose rhyme,
to her children one final time.
She kisses each child's tiny head,
and leaves six kids asleep in bed.
She watches his ghost plow the field,
through her red Mercedes' windshield.
Sweet smell of sweat in morning air,
reminder of her bad affair.
Love once mended every crack,
of this little forgotten shack.
Till her dreams of a better life,
carried away a poor man's wife.
Her tear drops drench her satin glove,
when she recalls a farmer's love.
Rich man's diamonds on her hand,
could not replace love's golden band.
