Miss Jennie I. Lee of Ellisburg,
Lived at the turn of the century.
This farm in New York, her life did merge,
With solitude in a mild country.
Geranium blossoms and a pink rose,
Greatly pleased her sensitive heart,
On bitter cold days when she arose,
She patterned her clothes to make a start.
Her mother baked meat pies,
Her father worked the fields,
Her brother helped to fertilize,
And all worked hard for better yields.
Her life was rich in family play.
Friends and relatives often came.
To sit in their parlor and pass the day,
The evenings spent much the same way.
Eggs to market, feed for the cows.
Letters to write and post today.
Life on the farm, rewarding and how!
Not one minute wasted. Bale the hay!
Aunt Mildred came over
And brought cake home made,
Sat down to dinner, moreover...
Then had a drink of lemonade.
Jennie was a loving and kindly soul,
Spent most of her day in toil.
But this life was good and bountiful,
'Cause she lived so close to the soil.

Miss Jennie I. Lee was a real person. She live on a farm with her family in Ellisburg, N.Y. I have one of her diaries, dated 1919, which I purchased many years ago at an antique book show. (See the photocopy above).
She recorded her day-to-day existence with great care and in greater detail. I feel I know her personally, that I actually met her. Now, that life and that era are gone forever.
