Have you ever spent a summer,
Lazy summer on a farm?
With the cats and little kittens,
With the horses and their fittin's,
With the cattle and the calves out in the barn?
Have you heard the rooster crowing;
Crowing loudly come the dawn?
Have you seen the misty sunrise,
Pink and gold before your two eyes;
Shine in glory twixt the trees out in the lawn?
Have you ever trampled barefoot;
Reckless barefoot in the clay?
In the fresh plowed dirt and diggin's,
On the clods, both small and big 'nes,
Till they crumbled 'round your toes so cool and gray?
Have you played upon the hay mow;
Pungent hay mow way up high?
Have you jumped and rolled and tumbled,
With your friends together jumbled
'Til you laughed so hard you 'most commenced to cry?
Have you romped on country acres;
Country acres in the sun?
Have you waded knee-deep streams,
Splashing cool as in your dreams,
Then went dipping with your clothes off just for fun?
Have you ever spent a summer,
Busy summer on a farm?
Chased a rat or chased a mouse;
Flushed a pheasant or a grouse,
And experienced rural living with its charm?
