What do the shadows know?
Like silhouettes* upon a stage
Dance 'round to and fro,
Attempting such, to there assuage.
What can these shadows bring?
Halo of light cast dim around.
To tell a story of some thing,
Tell tales of wonder to astound!
Wherefore these shadows cast?
Outlined in a pale, dull light,
Deploy to shed their skin at last,
Toward enigmatic sight.
Sharp-edged figure flow,
Ambiguous yet familiar,
Portray the things we know,
Perceived to be stellular.
What do these shadows tell?
Like anecdotes confound,
Look hard and long and you will see
Your own soul can be found.

* Silhouette derived its name from Louis XV's notorious finance minister Etienne de Silhouette (1709 - 1767). He would amuse himself by freehand cutting shadow portraits out of black paper. It became a popular craze in eighteenth century Europe.
