Starting with this article, I am going to be submitting a "weekly column" which I eventually hope to syndicate in small town newspapers, first in northern Indiana, then, if this is successful, perhaps all of Indiana and other states as well. The column will consist of short commentaries on all kinds of human interests, with mostly "upbeat," and "cheerful" articles that will leave the readers feeling good, laughing, or wanting to apply the helpful suggestions in their lives. The column may address "small town" problems from time to time, but hopefully in a non-confrontational and in a non-threatening manner. I will not take sides in highly controversial political, religious, or social issues, but the column will remain conservative in moral issues confronting small towns. The columns will be written under my pen name: "Lee Bradford Browne."
**********TAKING TIME TO SMELL THE ROSES**********
****************By Lee Bradford Browne****************
Some of the simpler things in life afford us the greatest pleasures: a leisurely stroll through the woods with a child, watching a breathtaking sunrise with someone special, or just taking time out to "stop and smell the roses." I've been told that one of the best antidotes for stress is watching tropical fish. I don't doubt but what bird-watching or star-gazing serve the same purpose.
It's amazing and enlightening to see the awe, the wonder, and the excitement children have in their eyes when they see such simple things in nature as a cloud, a stream, a leaf, a bird, or an ant. Have we lost our fascination for such awesome physical wonders? Can we stand under a magnificent oak tree swaying in the breeze, can we listen to thunder reverberating beyond distant hills, can we look up into the vastness of the Milky Way, or see the Aurora Borealis in the night sky, without recapturing a little bit of that childhood wonder?
The problem with most of us is we're too busy trying to make ends meet or scrambling to meet deadlines to notice the truly awesome sights, sounds, and smells around us every day. It's easy to get all wound up and stressed out. For some of us it's not so easy to take time to unwind: to take our shoes off and go barefoot in the grass, or to bend over and smell the roses.
