He disappeared into the air as quickly as he could. He had sensed her fear, and he decided it was best to leave before he caused her to panic.
Lucien DeNiex was a tall, dark-haired french man with a dark, magnetic gaze which caused his pale features to stand out.
As soon as he reached to his destination, he walked inside his home. It was an enormous house that was built among the woods many centuries ago. Lucien had bought it a few years ago once he heard it was on sale. Many people, excluding those who worked for him, thought him to be a strange recluse. Lucien never cared.
"How was it in town this evening?" his keeper asked in a pleasant tone.
Lucien turned to the middle-aged man with a hunched back, red hair, and brown eyes.
"Fine, John. Thank you for asking." Lucien nodded. "You're done for the day."
"Oh, I've known that for hours. I'm just so surprised that you're so preoccupied that you haven't noticed."
Lucien smiled--John always did get the best of him. "I'm fine--really. Now go. I don't wish to keep you."
John studied Lucien for a long moment before he turned and left the room.
A very wise old man, Lucien thought. I suppose that's why I trust him so much.
John happened to have been one of the few people that would tell anyone of Lucien's true existence.
Lucien DeNieux was a vampire.

Detective Jane Brown looked up when she was confronted by a sudden knock on her door.
"Come in," she called.
Jane was greeted by a small, petite woman with dark hair who looked oddly familiar.
"Um, hi," said the woman. "I'm Kaitlin Smith. I had an appointment with you?"
Jane smiled. "Yes, Kaitlin. Please, sit down."
Kaitlin nodded as she greeted the dective with a shy smile while entering the room.
"Please, sit down."
Kaitlin obeyed.
Jane sat across from her as she studied her new client. The poor woman looked exhausted. Whatever it was that's been going on in her life, it was clerly taking quite a toll on her.
"So, what can I do you for?" Jane asked kindly.
"First, I need to know . . . about the fee for your services. How much is it?"
Jane studied her. "I promise you I won't charge you more than necessary. Now, why don't you tell me the issue at hand, hmm?"
Kaitlin was silent for a moment before she said in a soft voice, "Of course." She hesitated for a moment before she said, "I think I'm being followed. It's usually in the evening, but . . . I can't shake this feeling that I'm being stalked."
"Do you think it's someone you know?"
"No. If so, I can't imagine who it would be."
"Have you told anyone else about these concerns?"
Kaitlin hesitated for a long moment. "I told my boyfriend--we're living comon-law. But he thought I was just being paranoid."
"How long have you been suspicious of this?"
"For a few weeks."
Jane tried not to react. She's been afraid of being stalked for that long and her boyfriend just dismisses it? she wondered. That's kind of weird.
"Have you recieved any strange phone calls? Letters?"
Kaitlin shook her head, giving Jane a sorrowful look.
Jane frowned. "Is there anything about this you can tell me? Anything at all?"
Kaitlin was silent for a moment before she said, "Well, it started when I met up with that guy."
"What guy?"
"It was sort of an accident at work--I had just bumped into him . . ."
"Tell me anyway."
Kaitlin looked at the floor before she looked up at the P.I. "I work as a janitor for a building. I . . . was kind of distracted when he bumped into me. He startled me more than anything."
"Did he leave?"
"Yes, but I saw him again last night. I had gotten home. I looked out my window, and he was there looking up at me."
Jane frowned. "Are those the only two times you've seen him?"
"Yes."
"Do you know him by any chance?"
"No."
"What does he look like?"
Kaitlin gave Jane the description as she wrote it down.
Once Jane was done doing so, she looked up at Kaitlin and said, "Perhaps this may not be of any importance, but I'd like to ask this one question."
A look of discomfort came across Kaitlin's face before she said in a calm voice, "Okay."
"Why would your boyfriend dismiss something like this? Stalking is a very serious crime. Don't get me wrong: this may be just a coincidence. This person may not be following you. But I'm wondering why your loved one isn't showing more concern."
Kaitlin just shrugged. "I don't know. He didn't even want me to see the police about it. He doesn't even know I'm here."
Jane did every to conceal her shock. "Hmmm. Well, don't worry about it. I leave everything between myself and my clients."
Kaitlin was clearly relieved. "Oh, thank you! I'll call you every week. Is that alright?"
"Whatever suits you."
Kaitlin rose to her feet. "Thanks again so very much." She held out her hand. "I truly appreciate it."
Jane smiled, taking Kaitlin's hand. "I'm just doing my job."
Kaitlin took her purse and slowly walked away.
