Deception
by Lyle Berry (Age: 61)
copyright 08-05-2003

Age Rating: 18 to 127

What you did, was implant a vision,
because now, your MTV videos
perpetually play in my head.
I cannot sleep - endlessly watching,
unable to extricate my eyes
or my thoughts
from the screen.
I’ve forgotten though,
whether the scenes
depict what was,
or what might have been.

What you did, was instill false hope,
because now, all those fairytale endings
have eluded me.
You, Princess of my reveries,
of my great expectations,
galloped away with the Black Knight
never once glancing back,
apathetic to my anguish -
with nary a tear.

What you did, was annihilate my joy,
because now, not a shred is salvageable.
All experience,
in comparison to the happiness with you,
is a void
that sucks the soul out of me.

What you did, was change me forever,
because now, in the palpable recollection of your flavors,
I cannot endure the grief of their absence,
or the time and miles from them,
which crucifies me.

What you did, was deceive me,
because now, without you to revere,
life is death….

What a deep poem! I like a lot of the descriptions that you used in it. I really like this stanza:

What you did, was change me forever,
because now, in the palpable recollection of your flavors,
I cannot endure the grief of their absence,
or the time and miles from them,
which crucifies me.

It really sticks out to me. I'm curious, though. Who were you describing? :)

Very good beginning and end. However, your poem lacks focus. Maybe it is I who don't understand, but at first I thought you were angry at American and then I thought you were angry at a woment and at the end I thought you were angry at women for fueling the America. In a nutshell doctor up the middle "What you did" to "flavors". I hope you don't take offense to my constructive critisism.

Deception is a hard pill to swallow. That's for sure. I don't know what holds people together. There are so many demands on us each day, especally dealing with people. And when those we care for deceive us, brother, that really hurts. Your poem is descriptive and analytical, with unflinching realism. Nice job as usual.
Warm regards,
Gregory
