The Taste of Bitter Almonds

  The Taste of Bitter Almonds

(A series of Haiku)

the taste of bitter
almonds lingers on my tongue
and will not depart

sweetness of the plum
and succulent yellow peach
now long forgotten

sun of yesterday
pitched in implacable
sinister dark clouds

fragrant wild orchids
withering parched and dying
mold'ring in the woods

a trusted thorny
spike of blazing crab-apple
piercing through my heart

the taste of bitter
almonds lingers on my tongue
with salt from my tears

Haiku is my favorite form of poetry. Your haikus are wonderful. I will re-read to feel the taste of it again and again.
Irina.

Had to re-read!
Loved this!

A little cyanide research on the web yielded:
What cyanide is

Cyanide is a rapidly acting, potentially deadly chemical that can exist in various forms.
Cyanide can be a colorless gas, such as hydrogen cyanide (HCN) or cyanogen chloride (CNCl), or a crystal form such as sodium cyanide (NaCN) or potassium cyanide (KCN).
Cyanide sometimes is described as having a “bitter almond” smell, but it does not always give off an odor, and not everyone can detect this odor.
Cyanide is also known by the military designations AN (for hydrogen cyanide) and CK (for cyanogen chloride).

Superb haikus in the classical style. Each has a wonderful turn and and synergizes with the next up to the stake in the heart closure in the last.
Great stuff, Moses.
Warm Regards,
Lyle

Great, like always! Is it, perhaps, a metaphor for getting older?

08-06-2003 Leah Garrison

I loved it! It was great! Except the taste of bitter almonds is NOT the taste of cyanide, with is TASTELESS. A bitter almond taste is the trademark of prussic acid.

08-06-2003 Gregory Christiano

Excellent write Moses. The taste of almonds also is the taste of cyanide! Now that's a bitter pill to swallow!
Regards,
Gregory
