When I abandoned my garden and took up despair
Where did it get me? Not anywhere!
My compost heap was a foul, smelly heap
Nettles in flowerbeds made one want to weep
O'er winter, some favourite plants gave up and died
Nobody to love them, so they never tried
To hold on 'til springtime and burst into bloom,
They knew the cow parsley would over them loom
Still, the devastated garden worked its own magic
Its owner took stock and stopped being 'tragic'
Many short 5-minutes sessions I twiddled my hoe
And a friend cleared the lawn for roses to grow
Chopped kitchen peelings were placed round the plants
On-the-spot-compost, tho' some folk looked askance
Now, there are worms in that once-barren soil
Gone are the slugs, thanks to birds' vigilant toil
Gardens should gladden a person's heart
Mine was more likely to cause a rude fart!
I'm thankful, once more, my surroundings reward me
Without Nature's miracles, where should we be?
Now bees, butterflies, birds bring my garden to life
Squirrel's enraged chatter at cats an occasional strife
Overhead, an arrowhead of ducks noisily fly by
And on the roof apex are my cats 'gainst the sky
