The Child's Contentment
by Pepper Basham
copyright 08-22-2003

Age Rating: 7 to 127

It was only a broom
safe in our living room,
but my five year old took it in hand.

He became a brave knight
armed and ready to fight
any monster invading our land.

My three year old knew
to live make-believe too
so he brought out an old broken chain.

With his "sling-shot" up high
and eyes raised to the sky,
he would cause old Golaith some pain.

Such sweet simple pleasures
trash transformed to treasures.
What can we learn through this tale?

To find joy in the small
and in life through it all
a pure, thankful heart never fails.

A wonderful poem, Pepper, which brings back fond memories of the simple things that amused as as children. Now days, it seems that most kids insist they be given all of the state of the art computer games and high tech toys and would never be content with the improvised things that satisfied us in the past. You have captured this feeling well and the moral of your story rings so true. Excellent read!

Warm Regards,
Lyle

Yes, indeed, Pepper. So many of us and our children have lost the ability to find amusement in simple endeavors and games, requiring only basic things and a good imagination. Everything is computer based now days it seems. This poem reminded me of my childhood and inspired me to write "The Endless Summer." Thank you for sharing this wonderful word portrait.
Warm Regards,
Lyle

A prop and some imagination is all kids need, and children have more of an imagination some adults! I remember making those silly hats from newspapers when I was a kid, then pretending to be a pirate! Using the newspaper to make a hat was more imaginative than using it to wrap fish! Nice topic.

A very nice poem with a good message
