A Fool In The Dark!
by Gregory Christiano (Age: 61)
copyright 08-26-2003

Age Rating: 13 to 127

Specious shapes and deceitful shadows receding from his eyes -
He stood motionless, his thoughts a rapid stream.
The sway of tempests in his mind tearing the fibers of his heart,
Fanned the fever of his maddening mind, wracked with fear,
Foredoom'd to some power unseen, o'erwhelming gloom froze him!
In vain he strove against it with clench'd and trembling hands,
Casting his dark eyes away from this impetuous, dreadful spot.
Death in his mien, madness in his eye stood irresolute.
Kneeling - "Odious spirit, begone!"

This unshrieved ghost woke!
From a slumber of a thousand years to drive the night!
Fright's pensive spell in dull, brooding silence came,
So erst did he hear nothing, see nothing but darkness 'round.

Then, afar, a flutter of wings, a rustling of leaves,
To usurp the silence with a flood of hoots and caws!
It comes! There - in the distance - it comes on wings,
The billowing, black night conceal'd this apparition,
No pious man could not intervene the thrust.
Visions of dismay gripped him to a ghostly harbinger.
Not a stirring wind, not a breath of breeze - airless -
Moonless night shrouded him with morning not far off.
Shades? The flapping wings grew nearer still...
A savage, untamed, fearful, unseen, unknown beast!
Wherefore the morn to break its spell?

These were but imaginings, to pry a gasp from the soul!
Fool! There's nothing there but dark fear.
The flapping ceased, the stings of conscience grew cold.
The intruder quickly vanished - but was never there!
Cloaked in willful creation - a spectre unseen!
Created, yes, in a fearsome mind's eye...his sense came to! and then...
Called upon reason to portend this apparition away...
Peace came at last, and a sigh of rest.
Afterall, his mind was settled and conclusions made thus...
There was nothing in the dark, but darkness!

Another excellent work, Gregory. One can sense a lot of work behind each and every poem you submit, with a superb choice of words, creating just the right moods. I hope some day you get the recognition you deserve.

Best wishes,
Moses

Hi Greg, An uncanny conveyance, reminding me the only thing to fear is fear it self....I've always felt the most lethal weapon a man or woman can carry is.....a thought

Absolutely wonderful. But I must say i'm not too sure on the whole 'there was nothing in the dark but darkness' part. ^_^ Then again...I'm just the odd apple.

That had to be one of the most amazing poems I've read. I could hear each word as it was said, and the speeding of the tempo. Definitly going into my scrapbook of favorites.

Fear is such a powerful emotion it can make us conjure up all kinds of horrible images in our mind. You capture this dreadful moment well with your words. You had me scared something was going to jump out and grab me, so the ending suprised me.
No fear is greater than fear itself.
