I couldn't resist posting this, after seeing Malissa A. had a poem with the same title.
*********************************
High on a wooden pedestal,
Carved from a sacred cinder block;
Two eyes stare from a brahman bull,
Standing on a wedge of temple rock.
Worshipping Baal in the Holy land,
Holy water in the desert sand;
Much too deep to understand,
The mysteries of the Babel land.
Mother of harlots, heavenly queen,
The birth of a chosen infant son;
Kneel to the God of the evergreen,
Deep in the heart of Babylon.
Hocus pocus magic tricks,
Phallic symbols, mystic sticks;
Mumbo jumbo voodoo fix,
All together in a ritual mix.
Holy vestments, priestly gowns,
Hallowed days and solemn vows,
Hollow churches in their towns;
Sanctimonious "better than thou's"
Bow to the queen of Babylon,
Bow to the brothel shrine salon,
Bow to the protitutes' icon,
Here in the land of Babylon.
Cross on the steepled belfry tower,
The "little Lord in the manger" view;
Tarrot cards and the witching hour,
Worshipping Baal and Jesus too.
Ishtar weeps in the Shinar land,
Evergreens in the desert sand;
Much too deep to understand,
The mysteries of the Babel land.
