Why We Write
by Gregory Christiano (Age: 61)
copyright 09-07-2003

Age Rating: 7 to 127

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why do we write? Why do we dream? What are our motives?
To create! To construct artistic creations! To satisfy our imaginations, to search the depths of our mind and consciously arrange and re-arrange reality. We explore the hidden meanings and plunge into a new world - a world of hope! To write is to hope. We single out these meanings, make sense out of confusion and convince the reader that this meaning exists in reality! We create reality! Whether it is symbolic, conceptual or a hard fact - we give it purpose, a face, and identity with gestures and art-form. We create a vision and make that vision true to our dreams. We personalize them. We make the unfamiliar, familiar. We draw the reader deeper into our story, to share our dream.
This is no hallucination. This is not misleading but a formalized way of expressing our philosophy, desires, our curiosity. It's a way of directing our energies and there is no need to be 'real.' We can scorn reality, change it, alter it ...or we can dish out truth as harshly as it is real! We make a statement and say it is newspaper reality!
Why do we write? To disclose amazing revelations; to seek the meaning of life, of death and everything in between. We give the answers.
We take the ordinary and make it extraordinary or vice versa. We give hope! Those who hope - write! Those without hope - do not!
We can take a fragment of a life and make it grand. We take a piece of a puzzle and solve it. We can turn a nightmare into a day-dream, a harmless remark into something with global consequences. We can write what's been written before. Dream what's been dreamt of before. Take the barest of facts and create a whole world!
We can take things that are beyond our grasp and make them our own. We can take things that elude us and possess them as our own. We take our imaginations beyond the limits of what is 'real' and soar with the eagles to mountainous heights. That is why we write.
We can be profound or mundane, serious, silly, truthful or disdainful - we can manipulate emotion, shape it and mold it to fit within our creation. We can get everything down on paper and pretend to be masters of language and art-form. All art is meaningful.
It is a noble task to write! It is our duty to write! We clear away mysteries; taking inaccuracies and make them truthful. Shed light or bring down the darkness! We turn human emotions into something we can understand. We take the abstract and make in concrete. We never tire, never hesitate, never back down. We are there with pen and paper, ready with nouns and verbs and tell our story.
Long scenes, short scenes, flashes of light, or introspective darkness - we are deliberately boring or unexpectedly entertaining. We can be fluid or solid as stone - all in one package. Why do we write? Because nothing is sacred, nothing is out of the realm of being said. Nothing can be left unsaid! We write of great themes or foolish, inconsequential lives - of fools and heroes - for they are all important. It is how we say these things that give them importance.
So, cultivate your day-dreams; nurture your feelings shallow and deep...widen your imagination - communicate those feelings and write, write and rewrite!
Say it softly or shout! A querulous critic might object. Disregard the negative. Disregard it soundly. Let the critics whine. Believe in yourself! Either you write or you don't. Either you have hope or you don't.
Don't be selfish - share yourself on paper - and the words will come alive. This why we MUST write!
To be a writer is to share who and what we are with the world, letting them glimpse our heart and soul. Fantastic write, Gregory.
True....
But sometimes, I sit for an hour at the computer, my fingers poised over the keyboard, yet I can think of nothing to write.
I don't get this inspiration stuff.
I can't get it when I'm ready for it, yet I can get it ina dream.
Life is weird.
My musings exactly...What you say is the truth: To write is to express our hearts and souls, our emotions and experiences, our imaginations and dreams...^^
Great composition! Your words truly did 'come alive.' ^^
Wow! You are amazing at making inspirational speeches! I wonder how many people will want to get out a pen and paper and write something after they read this. (That is if they the patience to finish it without writing something first.) You grabbed my attention and held it to the very end! Congratulations on an totally awesome write!
