O city of St. Petersburg,
Imperial majesty;
Haven of Aristocrats
Astride the Baltic Sea.
The home of Princes, of Dukes, of Czars,
And men of ancient lore;
Cradle of nobility
And mighty men of war.
Beyond thy crystal chandeliers
And wealth of jewels and gold:
Impoverished lives, broken shards,
Dust, ashes, rust and mold.
O city of St. Petersburg,
The home of serfs and slaves;
Bastion of the battle-axe
And place of shallow graves.
Great city of a thousand dreams,
Of hope, of love, and life -
Of prison walls, of iron fists,
Of blood, and bitter strife.
How peacefully thy rivers flow,
How serene they pass thee by -
How brutally thy cleaving chains
Do drag thee down to die!
O city of St. Petersburg
Astride the Baltic Sea -
Smile and dry thy misty eyes
And say "At last I'm free."
