~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The turf lay thick and green,
Deep blossom'd in the midst of rising hills;
Through all the wide-extended landscape swelling.
While on their verdant sides, a woodland screen,
Reaches the far horizon.
No mortal footsteps had ever o'er pass'd;
Its guarded paths within its hidden walls,
No mortal hand had ever yet profaned -
Its many tinted flowers-
Such as the wild enthusiast's souls had view'd
In the morning's formful sleep,
One eager eye had seen, with sympathetic heart -
Gazing on the white-wing'd clouds of noon,
There took refuge in some enshaded glen.
And there to see a vision on this star-lit vale!
Enwreath'd about, upon this genial soil,
Grass covered, close-matted in its many woof...
Whose scented richness embraced a traveler
with gentle arms.
A red rose, there, blushing in its virgin pride,
Hung lightly on its green and briery stalk.
Through this enchanted Paradise,
with pausing steps,
He wander'd day-long, a labyrinthine walk -
Led to green and endless expanse,
Of an unruffled lake, upon whose stainless
tide the water lily lay -
Slipping across the waters like a limped pearl,
Light-pictured in its waveless depths,
This traveler did rest his mind and heart,
And found a peaceful interlude!
