The Selfish Giant and the Three Golden Dragons
by Pepper Basham
copyright 10-31-2003

Age Rating: 4 to 127

Once upon a time, there lived three young dragons in a cave by the sea. They had always lived in this cave, with their beautiful mother and powerful father, surrounded by many treasures. Unfortunately, though, the dragons never seemed to be happy. They argued and complained all of the time, wishing for more brighter golden scales, or a larger cave.
One day, their father and mother spoke to them.
"My children," the father dragon said, with a deep voice that echoed throughout the cave. "You are old enough to go out into the world and find your own treasures. Think very hard about what the greatest treasure in the world can be and go out to find it."
Well, the young, golden dragons were excited and left their cave the very next day to set out on their adventures. The youngest dragon, and the smallest, flew far and wide until she saw a valley filled with the most beautiful flowers in all the world. Roses, violets, daisies, daffodils, every color of the rainbow, spread as far as the eye could see. The smallest dragon landed in the middle of the valley and smelled the sweetness.
"This is my treasure. This is the most beautiful place in the whole world," she thought to herself and decided to stay in the valley.
The second dragon searched far and wide, past deep valleys and rivers, until he came to the tallest mountaintop. The rest of the land lay below him, disappearing into the distant ocean.
"This is my treasure," he said. "I will be the grandest of all dragons, haveing the entire world at my feet." He let out a great roar and it echoed far below him.
The third dragon searched from one sea to the other, from one mountain range to the other, and still he found no treasure. He remembered his father's words and thought day and night about what the greatest treasure could be? Sadly, he stayed in the middle of the road, wondering where he might find his treasure.
Well, not far away live a very mean, very selfish giant, who loved gold. His head reached as tall as the greatest tree and he could cross mighty rivers with one step. More than anything in the world, he wanted to be the richest of all. As he was passing by the great valley of flowers he saw the smallest dragon fast asleep. The sunlight glittered off of her golden scales and the giant smiled. If he cut off all of the scales, he would be richer than the greatest knight. Very quietly, he walked up to the dragon and caught her in his magic bag. Not even the fire from her mouth could burn the bag so she could escape. When the giant finally released her, she found herself in a large, dark cave, surrounded by gold.
"Who are you?" she asked the giant.
"I am More and I am going to cut off your scales so I will be as rich as the bravest knight."
"Oh no," shuttered the poor little dragon. "Please do not harm me. I am only a little dragon and my scales are so small, but my older brother has scales much bigger than mine. He could make you as rich as a prince."
The giant smiled. "I will find him and have two golden dragons." So he chained up the little dragon and began his search.
The second dragon looked out over the world. All the people, animals, and land fell below him. Nothing except the sky reached higher than he did, but he wasn't happy. He was lonely. With everything below him, there was noone to share it with and the mountaintop was growing colder every day. Perhaps, he hadn't found his greatest treasure.
He was thinking so hard, that he didn't hear the footsteps coming behind him. In a wink, a bag covered his face and he was being pulled down the mountainside. When he opened his eyes, he found himself inside a dark cave with his little sister beside him.
"Now I shall be richer than the greatest prince. I shall take off both of your scales."
"Oh no," said the second dragon. "My scales may be larger than my sister's, but our big brother has golden scales that are as large as your hands. If you caught him, you would be richer than the mightiest king."
The giant thought this was an even greater idea. He'd have the scales of three golden dragons. So he chained up the second dragon and left the cave in search of the third.
Now the third dragon was still sitting along the roadside, lonely and missing his family. He hadn't discovered what his treasure could be and was tired of thinking. Suddenly, a small white rabbit came hopping by and whispered,
"I have heard some sad news about your brother and sister dragon."
"What have you heard," the dragon asked, standing to his full height and causing the rabbit to shutter from fear.
"The selfish giant have stolen them away to his cave."
"Do not be afraid of me, little rabbit, for I will not harm you, but this giant should be afraid."
The dragon spread out his mighty wings and left the ground, rising into the blue sky. He flew toward the mountains and met the giant by the edge of a great ravine.
"I shall capture you, dragon, and have your scales," the giant said, raising his large club into the air and shaking it.
"I shall defeat you, giant, and rescue my brother and sister," roared the dragon.
The giant swung his club and almost hit the dragon's head. The dragon blew a cloud of fire, but the giant jumped out of its' way. On and on they fought, until daylight turned to night. Finally, the dragon had an idea. He began to fly around and around the giant's head. He flew so many times, that the giant became dizzy. Loosing his balance, he fell headfirst down into the great ravine.
The dragon quickly flew to the cave and released his brother and sister. They walked together past the tallest mountain, which stood high and lonely. They walked past the valley of flowers, which were fading because of the coming winter.
"Our treasures were not wise choices," said the smallest dragon. "What treasure did you find?" She asked her oldest brother.
"I found the greatest treasure of all," the dragon said. "My family is my greatest treasure and I will be happy with them."
The dragons stayed close to each other for the rest of their days and always remembered how power and beauty can fade, but family is the greatest treasure of all.
