Brother, Have You Earned Your Wings? { Dedicated To Danielle Guairatez}
by Janet Owenby
copyright 11-16-2003

Age Rating: 13 to 127

Suicide, or an accident?
Tell me, was to die, your intent?
Many sleepless nights I have spent,
waiting for answers to be sent.

Did you finally learn to fly,
or did you tumble from His sky?
Have you found favor in His eye,
or did you make His angels cry?

Brother, have you earned angel wings,
feasted with our King of Kings?

Some little white pills magic spell,
ended this deadly fairytale.
You escaped from their prison cell,
but did you send your soul to hell.

Brother, have you earned angel wings,
and washed your soul in Heaven’s springs?

I will spend my life asking, “Why?”
You left my broken heart to cry,
bitter tears that will never dry,
without even saying, good-bye.

I can't believe you're really gone.
Did you really feel so alone,
that your best friend was a head stone?
Without you, how does life go on?

Brother, have you earned angel wings,
and strummed songs on golden harp strings.

Can you see tears in momma's eyes,
that soak her sheets when she cries?
She lives beneath a cheap disguise,
to hide the pain that she denies.

I pray your broken wings took flight,
and you were led into His light.
Down here, things have never been right,
since you left us behind that night.

Brother, have you earned angels wings,
and found solace, salvation brings?

Questions with no answers to find,
keep running through my troubled mind.
No suicide letter was signed,
and your death was never defined.

Dear brother, have you traveled far?
Please, hear me where-ever you are,
and cast your answers on a star,
to help heal your family's scar.

Brother have you earned angel wings,
and your halo of golden rings?

Janet, I think the poem is perfect. I lost someone recently to suicide. You described the feelings, sadness and hope for their soul with precision.
thank you. very moving.

Janet, I could picture a preacher reading this poem at a graveside funeral. Sorrowful and sad.
