Birdie Won't Talk Anymore
by Jim Nasium
"Birdie won't talk anymore," she said
as she stood looking at the blood on the rug
I walked over to her slowly
took our bird and gave her a hug
I told her that Birdie went to be with God
that we need to bury her now
she cried and looked up at me
then asked me to bring Birdie back somehow
"Birdie won't talk anymore," she said
while we walked out to the garden
as we dug a little hole in the ground
she said she would never do this again
she knows now that the bird is gone
that she played a little too rough
but things like this are good for her
they'll help her to grow up tuff
"Birdie won't talk anymore," she said
with great big puppy dog eyes
when she killed the second bird I bought
but it comes as no surprise
she killed the fish and got the cat
put it in a wooden box with two dogs
went across the street to my neighbors farm
and tried to butcher his hogs
"Birdie won't talk anymore," she said
when she squashed our pet hamster
I know I need to do something quick
but it don't help when I discipline her
the other day she went next door
took the neighbors rabbits out of their pen
she put mouse traps on their ears
then stuck them with pins again and again
"Birdie won't talk anymore," she said
when they came to take her away
she needs all the help she can get
and she needs treatment right way
she just goes around killing things
then says that she's sorry
but enough is enough, I gott'a be tuff
it's not safe for her to be free

Well written and powerful. Very frightening sign when children kill and/or abuse animals. If this is based upon someone true, I hope that the adult in the poem was able to become "tuff" and seek help for the child. Along with ending pets being kept in the home (that is always my first advice, get rid of all pets in the home, immediately, then we'll work on the rest). Well done!
