The Christmas Gift
by Betty Eskdale (Age: 63)
copyright 05-08-2001

Age Rating: 4 to 127

I changed (improved) this and reposted, not realizing that I had it here, sorry for the duplication, the other one A Christmas Gift of Long Ago, I think is a better version.

Two thousand and one years ago there was a very ugly bird
His voice was harsh and piercing, the worst you've ever heard;
He had no fancy plumage, his feathers were dull grey,
His face was just so downcast it scared other birds away.
Well, in the land where he lived, there came a special night
The sky and hilltops glowed, for miles, with an unearthly light;
People gazed in wonder and came there from afar
Guided by the dazzling light of an awesome, brilliant star.
The ugly bird was thoughtful, he wondered why they'd come
And in his curiosity forgot to be so glum,
So listening, he learned things from the animals and men;
Just why this night was special and would never come again:
For to this world a Child was born in deepest poverty
That in a stable He now lay, for anyone to see
He was the Son of Heaven, not of earth, the Son of God
So Blessed would be all He touched and the ground on which He trod.
"We must go to honor him" the animals all cried
With great excitement they set out to reach the Baby's side.
The ugly bird, left all alone, thought "I should go to see The Newborn Child, but I'm afraid He'll be afraid of me".
He gathered up his courage and decided he would hide
And catch a look at the Wee Babe by staying far outside
The circle of adoring eyes; but when he chanced to see
The wondrous Baby, filled with love, who sat on Mary's knee
Inside his heart he prayed "Dear Baby, could you love me too?"
I've always been so all alone. Is there something You can do?"
I have a friendly heart, You know, if not a friendly face;
I would be nice to everyone, I feel Blessed by Your Grace.
The Baby turned and gurgled gazing at the little bird
Love was shining from His eyes as if He'd heard each word;
That love flowed through the bird's full heart and teardrops swept his face
His joy was wondrous to behold, and as he left the place
He carried in him joy and hope, wonderment and peace
He knew acceptance and was glad for God's love does not cease;
But wonder piled on wonder as he passed a silver lake,
He stopped and stared bewildered and gave himself a shake;
But still not understanding as he gazed at his own face
Transformed to shining beauty by God's own Heavenly Grace
Behind him shone in glory arrayed with shining eyes
His tail reflected the love he'd seen in Baby Jesus' eyes.

Woa! This is really beautiful. Filled with religious symbolism and piety. I have been convinced for many years that the animals are the true connection with nature. They bring us close to our spiritual side. Nice job.

This is wonderful! Janet

I still think that Disney was foolish to turn this down. It is such a great piece of poetry and has such a great message.
