First Flight
by Gregory Christiano (Age: 61)
copyright 12-09-2003

Age Rating: 4 to 127

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On December 17th we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first powered flight of the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Its impact on humanity cannot be understated!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

With dense December ocean air,
The journey to the stars begins.
With wing warping, twisting wires,
With hip cradle and propellers,
Riding horseback in the skies -
Controlled and sustained!
With wooden bar and cloth,
The rudder turns the Flyer.
Hand-tooled with shop lathe,
The power lifted our spirits.
Lifting slowly, the young Eagle soares!
Monument to the Wright Flyer;
Gliding this airborne machine -
Oh! Noble humanity! Genius propells us aloft!
Cleaving the atmosphere with the company of birds!
All creatures whirling through the air,
They stand amazed, in awe...
Pulseless wings afloat without fatigue!
Behold! 'Aviation is the path to follow.'
Cast away the confines of earth...
Look up! To greet the angels with fixed wings!
Earthbound no longer, seizing the day -
Unencumbered and free, like Icarus,
And we shall not fall, but rise to celestial heights!

Ah, but what can man dream that he can not accomplish if he only puts his mind to is. NOT MUCH! Where there's a will there's a way. And to think we have most of what this age has because of those who dared to dream!

I don't have to tell you what you already know... I just absolutely adore your work! The imagery is alive, the descriptions wonderful... Thank you for sharing it.

What a wonderful write, Gregory. I especially enjoyed reading these lines;
'Look up! To greet the angels with fixed wings!
Earthbound no longer, seizing the day -
Unencumbered and free, like Icarus,
And we shall not fall, but rise to celestial heights!'

A veritable flight of words rising to praise those indefatigable believers in the ability to make man fly. They deserve the praise. It comes to light that there were others too, who may have made that history but Fate chose the Wright brothers.

Good work Greg, reminding me that progress is somwhat like love and the moon....it shall grown, or yet disappear

Gregory: Excellent memorial of the Wright brothers' first flight! And to think, even after they successfully flew that first plane, most of America, including its industry and commerce, looked upon this event as a novelty and a joke! What could we possibly do with this flying machine? it wasn't until the first world war and the development of the plane for military purposes, eventually led to its manifold commercial uses. It is incredible how far this world has progressed since that date in 1903.
What will the next 100 years bring?

Moses
