Underneath this painted on smile,
lives another's forgotten frown.
My heart has to walk that extra mile,
fearing someday I'll let them down.
Underneath sunny lips of red,
lives a heart brushed in autumn stain.
Cursed images caught in my head
feeds this heart with another’s pain.
Visions of children cast aside,
come to invade my dreams each night.
I drown in tears others have cried,
with no power to make it right.
You show me their pain, but no cure,
to dry their tears and ease their hurt.
Why must one be forced to endure,
that which they can never convert?
You issued a clown this mission,
to replace a frown with a smile.
All I have is my intuition,
to try and change a world this vile.
Perhaps that doubting Thomas was right,
and I suffer from a damaged brain,
but those dreams will haunt me tonight,
and convince me I’m not insane.
I will shiver from the bitter cold,
that bites at the homeless man’s feet.
Many tears my heart will enfold,
from this stranger I’ve yet to meet.
Through fate our paths will someday cross,
and he won’t recognize my face.
I will know all his pain and loss,
and tell him of my Father’s grace.
Maybe, it will help this stranger cope,
and bring some laughter to his day,
to meet an insane clown of hope,
that did not look the other way.
