Painful days and painful nights,
Wretched and grotesque;
Suffering little children
That wear a smiling mask.
Hidden bumps and hidden lumps,
Beaten sore and bruised;
Suffering sons and daughters
All battered and abused.
Bitter men with bitter wives,
Simmering with rage;
Just below the surface,
The wild beast in the cage.
National stain and national sin,
Reprehensible;
Crushed and broken spirits,
Incomprehensible.
Heal the heart and heal the soul
Of the young and old;
Heal the broken spirits,
Warm the hearts grown cold.
Mend the parents, mend the child,
Repair the damage done;
The mother to the daughter,
The father to the son.
