No Hearth and Home
by Moses Hochstetler (Age: 59)
copyright 12-13-2003

Age Rating: 10 to 127

I have no hearth and home;
No place to go,
No place to roam
But empty streets
And cold retreats
Beneath the culvert's dome.

I face the winter's chill
With tattered coat,
With tattered will;
A lonely heart
That plays the part
Of social blight and swill.

I seek the shelter's dole:
A padded cot,
A steaming bowl
Of broth or soup,
As I recoup
The remnants of my soul.

I have no hearth and home;
No place to go,
No place to roam.
My last request...
Eternal rest,
And final welcome home.

The homeless are always with us. In NYC, May Bloomberh had an idea of purchasing 16 derelict cruise ships from Greece and turning them into a homeless shelter in the East River. This would accomplish two things: it would avoid setting up shelters in neighborhoods to the consternation of local residents and this arrangement onboard ship would accomodate individual staterooms for each of the homeless. This is a sound idea, but the funds for such a project are not there. So, naturally, the homeless roam the streets.

Excellent Poem moses. You really make the reader feel the despair that the homeless man must face on a daily basis. I am so glad you wrote this poem because maybe those who read it won't be so quick to turn the other cheek and judge the poor man on the street.

A truly insightful look into the lives of those many don't try to understand or know. You have gotten rid of the stereotype and allowed for feeling from the reader to radiate toward the narrator of the poem. Great, I love it.

Extremely touching! I like this one. It makes you feel more sympathetic to those in the streets and reminds me of the song "A house is not a home"
Good job!
