Now the sea and the tide
And the surf are as one,
As they flow and they ebb,
And they swell in the sun.
As the sand changes shape
On the shores and the dunes;
Sifting in, sifting out,
Keeping time with the moons,
While the clouds in the sky
With the wind on their tail,
Blowing in, blowing out,
Dissipate without fail;
As the man without rules
Is awash on the reef -
Hurting friends, hurting self,
Tossed about with his grief.
But the boulders and rocks
Are both solid and sound,
As they stand with their weight
Anchored fast to the ground;
And the hills and the plains
On the lands of the earth:
Growing grass, growing grains,
Giving food, wine, and mirth;
With the trees standing tall,
Standing firm in the sod:
Giving fruit, giving shade,
As a gift from our God;
As a man with his roots
In the laws of the land -
Helping friends, helping self,
With his firm loyal stand.
