Majik
by Lyle Berry (Age: 61)
copyright 12-22-2003

Age Rating: 18 to 127

  Majik

In daymares, I see Majik
lofting dizzily amidst the clouds
above the angled Royal palms,
languidly curving his blue-black flight feathers
to capture the fickle autumnal thermals.

I marvel at him soaring,
and simply reveling
in the blessings of the Earth
and of the Sky.

With raucous greetings,
he plummets to me
to perch briefly,
clenching my arm
in possessive talons.

On my sleeve,
Majik polishes his formidable beak
while his enigmatic eyes rivet mine -
amber cabochons concealing
the wisdom of the Ancients.

With curt farewell, he launches -
again seeking the Heavens,
while wind from his mighty wings
buffets my face.
We are one, Majik and I;
Man and Crow – one soul.

Nicely done, Lyle. elegant language. My family had a pet crow when I was young, but I think the "call of the wild" finally got to be too much for him. We also had a pet racoon we called "Peanut" which we raised with a little doll bottle, and then eventually returned to the wild.

Best wishes,
Moses
