The Chosen
Chapter 5
by Natalie Amaral

Kaitlin woke up the next morning feeling lightheaded and sore. She didn't know why that was since she was always in perfect health. When she looked at herself in the mirror, however, she looked normal.

Looks can be deceiving, Kaitlin thought.

David was still in bed, snoring drunkenly. He had startled her with quite a confrontation last night.

"I saw you talking to your boyfriend," David said in an exaggerated manner.

Kaitlin stared him. "What do you mean?"

"Don't play innocent with me. You were out on the street when some guy walked up to you. Are you going to deny it?"

"No, but he was just someone who confused me for someone else."

"Liar."

"I'm not lying."

David almost hit her, but he was so drunk, he missed, tripped, and fell to the floor, unconscious. Kaitlin didn't even bother to help him to his feet. She was more relieved that they didn't end up having another one of those evenings.

Kaitlin frowned as she thought about her appointment with Jane. What was it that was so important that she needed to tell her? Kaitlin sighed. It didn't matter. She would find out soon enough.

***

Jane sat with John Cooper. He was a retired chief of police with whom she remained acquainted with. The two of them were sitting at a Starbucks coffee house.

"So," John said, giving her a pleasant smile, "you told me over the phone you needed my advice about something."

"Yes."

John gave her a curious glance. "By all means, don't keep me in suspense. What is it about?"

"It's about a case I'm working on. A young lady came to me recently. She thought . . . or thinks . . . she's being stalked."

John gave her a strange look. "Well, is she or isn't she?"

Jane took a deep breath and grinned sheepishly. "This is how it goes."

Jane told John most of the details about her encounter and knowledge about Kaitlin's case. By the time Jane was done, John appeared to be deep in thought.

Jane frowned. "Why do you look as though you know a little bit about what I'm talking about?"

"Whatever gave you that idea?"

"Just the expression on your face."

"I was just thinking that the young lady has more to fear from her boyfriend than this stalker."

Jane sighed. "I have been telling myself that the same thing over and over again."

John smiled.

"What's your two cents on this?"

"For one, if she wishes to see this stranger, that's up to her. Neither of you has any evidence that he's capable of any danger.

"As far as this creep she's living with is concerned, you do know that you must tell her about his criminal record. Yes?"

Jane nodded. "Yeah. We have an appointment tomorrow."

"Good."

"I'm just nervous about how she'll take it."

John gave her a serious look. "My dear, you do know that no news is good news. In this case, what she may not know will certainly kill her. That's how plenty of domestic abuse cases end up."

"If she is being abused."

"From the sounds of it, the signs are all there."

Jane knew it was useless to come up with an argument with that.

"Now," John said, appearing relaxed again, "let's enjoy our beverages and stop with all this seriousness, shall we?"

***

Once Jane had left, John was still sitting in the coffee house.

Kaitlin Smith is Jane's client, John thought, doing his best not to panic. Oh no.

John quickly drank what was left of his coffee and ran to his vehicle. He had to talk to Lucien right away.
