Je Veut Te Dire / I Want to Tell You
by Heather Jackson (Age: 30)
copyright 01-02-2004

Age Rating: 13 to 127

~~The following poem was composed in French. I then translated it into English. The English text follows the French.~~

Je veux te dire, mon père Dieu
ces choses que tu m’as donnés
je veux chanter une chanson
digne de toi, de ta majesté
je veux écrire quelque chose
qui peut exprime quel ravi
a saisi mon cœur, mon âme si faible

J’ai peur de laisser ces idées aux pierres
d’abandonner l’adoration a la terre
et, en faisant, te donnant l’idée de
je ne t’aime pas, je t’adore pas
comme je dois faire même que la respiration
Mais quand je pense que tu chanteras
Que Tu, mon Dieu, qui a fait le monde !

Tes mots ont fait les étoiles, le soleil
L’univers, et tu veux habiter dans les miens ?
Bien, mais si ça, ce n’est pas assez, mon dieu
Tu m’as fait ta chère, ton amour, ta joie
Et tu m’as dit que tu chanteras de moi
toi, qui a crée tout le monde avec tes mots
Tu chanteras de moi avec joie quand je rentrerai

Bien, si tu peux, si tu veux, dit moi, mon dieu
comment puis-je te dire également bien
comme je t’adore, comme je t’aime ?
Comment puis-je découvrir des mots
comme celles que tu m’as donné si gratis ?
Comment puis-je t’adorerai assez magnifiquement
comme ton amour pour moi demanderas ?

I want to tell you, my father God
These things that you've given me
I want to sing a song
Worthy of You, of your majesty
I want to write something
That could express the delight
That has seized my heart, my soul, so weak

I'm afraid of leaving these ideas to the rocks
To abandoning the adoration to the earth
And, in so doing, give you the idea that
I don't love you, I don't adore(worship) you
Like I must do just as I must breathe
But when I think that you will sing
That you, my God, who made the world

Your words made the stars, the sun
The universe, and you want to live in mine
And if that weren't enough, my God
You made me your dear, your love, your joy
And you told me that you will sing over me
You, who created the world with your words
You will sing of me with joy when I return

Good(then), if you would, if you could, tell me, My God
How can I speak equally well
Of how I adore (worship) you, how I love you?
How can I find the words
Like these you have given me so freely
How will I be able to worship (adore) you as magnificently
As your love for me will demand?

A stunning poem. It flows so well in french, and is very beautiful, in both english and french, but I think the french version is amazing, because it's the orriginal language of the poem. So many things get lost in translation.

My highest compliments, it is nice to see French in print.....I was just visiting in Quebec and had several ladies sing fait dos dos to me....I hadn't heard it since I was 3, amazing what a joy it brought.

Places in the English poem where there are words in parentheses are places where the French word carries multiple meanings, and I chose the one that fit best for the translation. However, all the meanings for that word were in mind as nuances of meaning when I wrote, and I wanted them considered when the poem is read, so that people could understand all the passion I had when I wrote this.
In fact, at the time I wrote this, I was really struggling to express myself adequately. I was in awe with God, and everytime I sat down to write, to express the worship and awe that flooded my whole person, I found that the words seemed empty and incomplete. That's when I decided to try writing in French, to try the struggle in another language, to see if that would make a difference...and it did. By writing in French, I finally felt as though I had expressed the wonder in my soul.
Of course, then I was faced with a new challenge; I knew very few people who could enjoy my work as I had written it. Almost immediately, I had to translate it to share it, and then I found that there are words in French that are just rich with meaning. "adorer" means both "to adore" and "to worship", and I was afraid that my readers might not understand that both were in my heart as I wrote, that to me, to truly ADORE someone is to worship them, and to worship someone requires a sort of adoration.
Anyway, I wanted to share this with you guys here, and I wanted you all to understand why the English was done the way it was.
~Heather
