I picked up a crayon drawing
that my student left behind.
If you think that’s not perfection,
you are so obviously blind.
No, it had no special shading,
no foreshadows, abstract art,
but into this lovely drawing
she poured out her soul, her heart.
It didn’t have a real horizon,
just some grass and flowers too.
And a few white fluffy clouds
in a sky of perfect blue.
It had a multicolored rainbow
and the brightest smiling sun.
Each inch was colored to perfection,
I was fairly sure she was done.
What would I tell my little artist
when she would come back the next day?
But I just turned over her paper
and scribbled her a bright red ‘A’.
There was so much I had to teach her
but as I looked at what she drew,
all the subjects seemed so petty
compared to what she already knew.
Her drawing had no streaks of darkness,
and not a single shade of gray.
Perhaps if children ruled the world,
peace wouldn’t be too far away.
