The Art of Communication?
by Walter Jones (Age: 62)
copyright 02-27-2004

Age Rating: 4 to 127

The wonder of life is in that which happens everyday. I never find the door closed because there is always a gap. In writing I find that words and images do not always appear the way we intend. Each of us sees things from our own perspective. The engagements
of people and feelings of life, death and pro-creation. The want I have, the need of others, the crying in the street, all impact slightly different. Life has little value to some, if hunger
is the only future to find. Death provides comfort in the promise of a better life or even a reward for tasks or deeds completed. People touch people, lending warmth to body and soul by sharing both understanding and immediate need and satisfaction provided by human contact. We are a strange lot, feed the body, cloth the soul, comfort the lonely, move to the next task, never seeing their results.
Yet, I continue to write words create images and miss many points along the way. I leave a message on the stone, but the message has many voices and finds a thought often on its own. I still write and push forward a point or two, hoping that some good comes from, what is written.

I was told , or read, or acquired it from somewhere, that as a teacher, if you truly touch but only one person in your lifetime, the journey will have been successful and worthwhile. Another relevant thought that has stayed with me is, "by your student(s) you'll be taught."

These are both so true and evident in your writings and by the responses that readers offer.

I think that you have touched many people so far, Walter, with many more still to be touched. And I think, equally, that as a teacher, so you have been taught by your students--which is also evident in your writings.

Thank you. ^^

It seems that I am not the only one who believes in doing good deeds. Nowadays popular culture sees it as "uncool" or being a "goody-goody" to help someone in need, but I was a child with old-fashioned parents who believed in helping others and being nice to everyone. As I say "The world already has enough jackasses. Does it really need one more?"

Anyway, I like the message you impart; the concept of taking time to slow down and communicate instead of rushing through life is one that is lost on many people nowadays and it is one that is sorely needed in these times. It is also of importance with the advent of technology, which all but removes the human element from everyday interactions while imparting its benefits. While I am addicted to communication and entertainment technology, I also like to go out and interact with real people from time to time. And what you said about communication gaps is also true... different people have different perspectives on different issues, and sometimes these beliefs and people clash. But diversity is what makes the world an interesting place to live in... at least from my fairly liberal point of view.

As far as the mechanics go, this is solid. The sentences are short but give the message quickly. The only major problem I could spot was structure: it looked like you tried to do paragraph form, but did not quite make it. Like I said, that is the only serious problem I could find. Other than that, you did a solid job with this.

This is provocative. Reading the work, I sense a similar need to convey, through language, the "reality" that I experience, knowing, paradoxically, that it will be , at best, just an approximation of it. I think this is part of the mystery of why artists do what they do-- that need to communicate and touch, honestly, irregardless of the risks.

It's such a pity that people in this world can strive to do good, and yet not stick around to see what they've done. I believe that the icing of a good deed lies in not how many people of things you may change or help but the blooming smile recieved or even just seeing what you've done. *shrugs* Maybe things have changed and I never noticed, but why can't people just enjoy it and not rush off to help another "poor soul". It's not the quantity of the deeds, quality is what really counts. Blech, when did I start to sound so frumpy and old fashioned?? Alright, I think I've bothered you enough for one comment. Great write Walt!
