Funny…
not ha! ha!
how
I’m afraid of even hints of happiness,
because, when they rear their cute little heads,
I detect the depths of depression
sinisterly lurking behind them,
concealing dark malice of fore thought.
Happiness comes with a heavy price.
Each rare time I start to taste
even a modicum of joy,
it catches in my craw,
like a big Bluefish bone
and I am rendered (choking)
back to the Doldrums.
Melancholy is my natural state.
How I long for,
but oh! how I fear,
those token moments
of Euphoria.

That surprised me for some reason, but of course it is what your muse uses to keep you writing...
I love Edmonton, discovered some neat galleries there and Montreal smoked meat, bagels and cream cheese on 82nd Ave (Whyte Ave). I hope you learn to enjoy tiny moments of happiness, they contrast well with the dark.
Lyle, your poem speaks to me..I think that many of us enjoy the depths of depression because that's what we're familiar with, while the heights of happiness are to be feared, because it remains part of the great unknown. Fantastic write.
