  God Only Knows

While we nail one foot to the floor
and run around it,
while we exercise our allegiance to ecstasy
and spill our spores in the sheets;

while we wait here passive, with that
deer in the headlights look,
while we drool in slack-jawed apathy
and ineffectually do what we normally do;

as we successfully shun everything
that might entail sacrifice,
as we entice others to do our dirty work,
so our hands remain pristine;

as we slip slide away through our days -
we slick snakes sans sympathy;
as we deny culpability - subvert all our sly sins
and remain guiltless in our guile
(pointing at Eden);

while we ignore the sick and the starving,
while we turn a blind eye to the disenfranchised,
the abused, the beaten, the bewildered -

that good old green globe still slowly spins
and salvation still beckons from the blue -
the red blood of the Lamb still spills on Calvary,
entreats us to confess, love him and be saved.
God only knows why He’d want us.

This is heavy! Why would God want us? - you're right, there is nothing in us worth wanting. But that is the great miracle; God loves us!!!

Another great study in human nature, and the path to forgiveness, grace, and salvation. A high price to pay for deliverance - but willingly paid by our Saviour.

(I must nag you again on ratings Lyle ^.~ more than just 18 can see this :) )

Well...

On the question of humanities hypocritical natures...shall we not get me started on that? And ever stop to think that maybe god has stopped approaching humans for a reason? God approached Abraham, and many of modern Christianities and Judiasms founders ate with god, bantered with him, even wrestled the angels. And yet...where has he gone? Does he approach us now? Does he send us blinding images in the candlelight that make us quiver in terror, or sit with us at dinner and host friendly arguments as he did with Abraham?

Maybe god has grown weary? or maybe we have pushed him away. As you said, God only knows. We have twisted and destroyed His word, we have mangled it into something that has become a horrible puppet, a bloody little thing we justify by Jesus, not taking into account what he said. We judge, whereas none should, for are any of us without sin? We hate, despite the word of Jesus to love. We say we are good little religious believers, although no matter our religion, be it Buddhist, Christian, Islamic, who really is willing to sacrifice their very joys, their very happiness, for their religion?

I have seen very few.

God only knows why He has remained with us. Buddha only knows why He still smiles upon us. Allah only knows why He still tolerates a people that have used him so horribly to justify such slaughter as 9/11. None of us ever can, until the day comes when we sit with god as our ancestors did, and can see his face, and smile with him, and banter, or speak, and ask questions and finally, finally get the answers we all want.

Great job, Lyle. I hope I haven't offended you in this. And sorry if anything I say is off. I haven't read the bible in a VERY long time, but I study religion a lot from an anthropological and philosophical point of view.

I loved this.

Forever,
Debra

All I know is that God is much wiser than we are when it comes down to caring about humanity.
Fantastic write, Lyle.
