"Are you positive about this?" Lucien asked, his body stiff after John had given him the news.

John stared at him. "Lucien, I know Jane--this isn't something she would lie about. She has worked for me for years before she became a detective and, even after that, before I retired."

Lucien shook his head. "Well, did she say that Kaitlin no longer wants to check if I'm her stalker?"

"That's because you already verified that to Miss. Smith."

"Jane doesn't know you're my keeper, correct?"

"Correct."

Lucien nodded. "Good, then. We have two things in our favour."

John remained silent.

"Tomorrow night I have to meet Kaitlin," Lucien said. "From what you're telling me, she is in danger. I don't want her staying with him any longer."

"Are you going to need my help?"

"No. I don't want you putting your life in jeopardy."

John only stared at him. "What do you want me to do? I feel I must do something."

Lucien only shook his head, not knowing what to say about that statement.

Jane opened the door, and was relieved to find Kaitlin standing in the hallway. "Miss. Smith, I'm so glad you've arrived."

"From what you told me, we have some urgent business to discuss."

"We do."

Kaitlin stepped into the room. "Then what is it? Why couldn't you have just told me whatever news it was over the phone?"

Jane sighed. "Please, sit down."

Kaitlin did as she was told. "If this has anything to do with that stalker--."

"No, it isn't."

Kaitlin frowned. "I don't understand."

"I usually do a background check on my clients," Jane said carefully.

"I have no problem with that--I have nothing to hide."

"When it came up that you were living with David Kobliski, that name rang a bell."

Kaitlin suddenly looked uncomfortable.

"Miss. Smith, are you aware of his police record?"

"He's only been in jail once, but he was released," Kaitlin said quietly. "It was all just a misunderstanding."

"Just once?"

"Yes."

"Miss. Smith, how long have you known Mr. Kobliski?"

"Two years."

Jane handed Kaitlin the faxed police file. "You clearly don't know him as well as you think you do."

Kaitlin took the file. Once she read it, Jane could easily see the blood drain from her face. Kaitlin looked up at Jane. "This isn't true," Kaitlin whispered in a trembling voice.

Jane sadly shook her head. "I'm so sorry. Clearly you didn't know about his illegal activities."

Kaitlin's eyes suddenly filled with tears as she started to cry silently.

"Miss. Smith, I need you to answer my next question honestly. Is he abusing you in any way?"

Kaitlin's sobs were no longer silent. Jane knew what the answer to her question was.

Jane quickly walked up to her side. "You know you can't go back to him. He's a dangerous man. With his record, if you press charges, you can put him away for a long time."

Kaitlin glared at her. "Are you trying to give me false hope? I know how the system works! If he goes to prison, he'll be sentenced to five years at most."

"You can still leave him--you can make a fresh start. I'll help you."

Kaitlin remained silent for a moment before she quickly rose to her feet, wiping the tears from her eyes. "I must go. I have to go somewhere I can think. How . . . how much do I owe you?"

"You don't need to worry about that now, but--."

"Fine, goodbye."

"At least promise me you'll call about your decision."

Kaitlin had already left.

Natalie, I'm really admiring how tightly written the story is...in terms of grammer, puncuation and structure. The story is flowing very smooth from chapter to chapter. I'm really getting drawn into this story and enjoying every chapter!

I'm not so sure John is as bad as Robert thinks--at least, he seems upset to discover who Kaitlin is, which seems to indicate the "quest" may not bode well for Kaitlin, and now there's conflict for *john* as well.... This quest, which I'm now very curious about (ie, going to keep turning virtual pages ) is causing conflicts for everyone.
