Kaitlin walked along the sidewalk for hours, tears streaming down her face. She had been crying and walking for hours. She knew she should have been home hours ago, but she didn't care.
How many people has he hurt? Kaitlin wondered. He has been hurting me, and that was bad enough. But who else?
David had clearly spent her money illegally. Kaitlin had read in David's police record that he had bought drugs and weapons. Just the thought of that filled her with horror.
Jane's right; I can't go back to him, Kaitlin thought. He's more dangerous than I ever thought. I must leave him.
"Miss. Smith?"
Kaitlin looked up and saw the mysterious stranger she had met the other night. She looked around and realized that it was already evening; she had walked along the streets all day.
"You've been crying," he said worriedly, taking out a handkerchief and giving it to her.
"I found something out about . . . someone."
"About your boyfriend?"
Kaitlin looked up at him in amazement.
"Yes, I know about him, too."
Kaitlin wiped away her tears as he handed her a cell phone. "Call work and call in sick. Let's go to a diner so we can talk."
"I don't know your name."
"Lucien DeNieux."
Kaitlin looked down. "Why are you so willing to help me?"
Lucien hesitated before saying, "Because I don't want you to suffer anymore."
Kaitlin didn't reply to that statement.

Jane sighed, resting her head in her hands. It had been hours since Kaitlin left, and Jane hadn't heard from her.
I just hope she doesn't confront that jerk, Jane thought. Who knows what will happen if she even tries that.
Jane couldn't blame Kaitlin for being upset earlier. It was evident that she didn't know about David's lifestyle. Kaitlin was also right about the fact about David getting a light sentence if he were to go to prison for domestic abuse. When it came to things like that, the law sucked.
However, Kaitlin was going to have to leave David Kobliski sooner or later. By doing that, she was going to have to leave him. If Kaitlin did call her, Jane would help her in a heartbeat.
Jane shook her head. She had never allowed herself to get so personal with a client. But this was different, and all too familiar. But her own past was ancient history.
Jane's phone rang suddenly before she grabbed it. "Hello?"
"I'm willing to take your advice," the tired voice of Kaitlin's voice said over the phone.
A wave of relief overcame Jane. "Miss. Smith, you have no idea how glad I am to hear from you; I was so worried. You're not home, are you?"
"No. I'm with someone. He said he'll take me to see you."
"Good. Does he know where this office is?"
"Yes."
"Okay. I'll be waiting for you."
The line went dead.
Jane hung up the phone, feeling somewhat calmer than before.
