Kaitlin returned the phone to Lucien. "Thank you," she whispered.
Lucien studied her closely, even more grateful that he had told her to call in sick. She clearly wouldn't have been in the right shape to go to work.
"I must look a grisly sight," Kaitlin muttered.
"Far from it," Lucien breathed. Even though her eyes were red from crying and her cheeks were wet with tears, she was such a sight to behold.
Kaitlin sighed. "You must think I'm such a fool."
"Whatever for?"
"To think I was in danger of you when I was truly in danger of David--the man I had loved for too long."
"Do you still love him?"
Kaitlin shook her head. "The only reason why I stayed in that relationship was because I was afraid. I had left him before, but he found me. He made me pay for it terribly."
"But you didn't have help then, did you?"
Kaitlin shook her head.
"You do now." Lucien rose to his feet. "Come." He held out his hand. "Let me walk you out. We'll get a ride."
Kaitlin took his hand, and they walked out of the diner.
They were both amazed at how deserted the street was compared to how it was earlier. Whereas before the street was filled with people, now it was practically empty.
Lucien studied Kaitlin carefully. How do I tell her? he wondered. How do I tell her about her being one of the chosen? She would think I'm mad if I told her I was a vampire, let alone any further details than that.
Lucien's thoughts were interrupted by someone pounding a hard object against his head. It didn't hurt him much; more than anything, it just stunned him. However, it was enough to knock him onto the ground.
Behind him, Kaitlin screamed.

David walked up to Kaitlin and backhanded her. "Did you think you can get away with cheating on me? Did you?"
"I wasn't--."
David didn't let her finish. "You picked the wrong man to cheat on!" David screamed.
"Touch her again, and you'll die."
David turned, and was stunned to find Lucien rise to his feet.
"No," David whispered.
Lucien grinned melavolently, revealing his fangs and red eyes. "Yes," he hissed.
David then quickly took his gun, pointed at Lucien, and shot him . . . only so that he and Kaitlin could watch the bullet wound close.
Lucien then grabbed David by the throat and push him hard against the wall so hard, David felt himself being lifted.
"NO!" Kaitlin screamed. "Please!"
Lucien turned to Kaitlin, his anger ebbing only slightly before he turned to David. "You're so lucky. If it weren't for her, you would have been my first meal in centuries. However, I'll let you live only to turn yourself to the authorities. Is than understood?"
Unable to speak, David only nodded.
With that, Lucien threw him into the garbage dumpster.
He then turned to Kaitlin, who had taken a few steps back.
"Kaitlin," Lucien said softly, his face returning to normal. "Kaitlin, please . . ."
Kaitlin didn't say anything--she turned and ran. Lucien tried to reach her, but she had tripped and fallen, hitting her head on a rock.
"Oh, no," Lucien whispered, checking her pulse. She was alive--good.
In the distance, he heard sirens.
Gathering Kaitlin's limp body in his arms, he jumped up in the air and flew.
