Barefoot Girls
by Wayne Thomas (Age: 58)
copyright 06-27-2004

Age Rating: 10 to 127

Pale blood-hued leaves
hang from rough-barked sugar trees.

Barefoot girls in torn blue jeans
sit crosslegged on the cold grass,
heads in books,
toes slowly turning crimson.

Loud talking boys play
a quick game of kickball,
laughing and shouting.
Some of the girls wave and smile.

The boys play kickball.

This reminds me of the time I was in college and the guys would play football, while the girls watched. They would play hard to impress the girls, so the girls would like them. I didn't like playing football, but I sure did like the girls, so while the guys were doing their thing, I would sit and flirt with the girls. I know I was having a lot more fun than the guys.

Thanks for the memories,
David Pekrul

In the older version it goes,

Loud talking men watching
playoff football game,
laughing and shouting.
wives are leaving for the mall

men watch football!

I like your poem just as it is. Thanks, Anthony

I paused a moment at the words of the poem as my mind gently reminisced. But when I read the comments... my mind came to a screaching halt! I remember the times you write of, before boys realized there were girls and when baseball was more important, when some girls realized there were boys... but some were just noticing. I thought this was a time in everyone's life just before puberty destroyed their priorities. After reading the comments, I wonder if some people were ever children. How sad if they missed one of the happiest times of their life.

Books? Kickball?? What's that??? Sorry... heh.... in this generation girls are far too busy with make-up and oogling over boys in magazines and boys are too busy with impressing the girls and trying to prove who's manlier... lol.... I wish we could go back to the times you write about! *sigh* oh well....... just kinda makes ya wonder what's next....
