Taste of Autumn, 1999
by Wayne Thomas (Age: 58)
copyright 06-14-2004

Age Rating: 13 to 127

I spent last evening at water's edge.
watching the clouds grow slowly scarlet,
violet, indigo,
black.

Today I wake to returning geese,
talk-honking with one another,
saying anything--worthwhile?
and who can tell?

Afternoon, a little chill
which should help the apples fall,
bites through my half-buttoned shirt
and stimulates the brain to mad
October verses.

In the east,
to cannonade reply,
lightning flashes in the darkening
heavens, and on the wind come
icy drops of
rain.

This poem is wonderfully written. It makes you feel the wind on your face and the rain in the air. Thanks, Anthony

Wayne, your poem gives the reader a smorgassbord of tastes and pictures that let autumn linger in the mind all year long. Sensational.

ack... I tried to correct the last line of my comment... but the darned thing wouldn't let me.... what I meant to say was..... When a poet can bring unfamiliar sensations to the reader then they have achieved the highest rank of creative expression.... there.... I feel better now... :P And again... this is an amazing write!!

THis surely is a taste of Autumn! As Joan says, you appeal to the reader's every sense and truely bring them the season no matter when or where they are! Living in an excruciatingly hot desert for the better part of my life, I've never truely had the chance to experiance such a lovely passing of season. Your descriptions have the power to show me, though I've never been through it. When a poem can bring unfamiliar sensations to a reader then they have complete and total talent! Beautifully done!

~Steffie~

btw-... I wonder what the geese really *are* saying to eachother.... O.o
