don't forget to Remember me
by Leah Garrison (Age: 20)
copyright 04-24-2004

Age Rating: 13 to 127

Dancing round the maypole on a spring afternoon
Golden hair and fluffy skirts with petals all bestrewn
She spotted him sitting all alone on the sidewalk end
He was new to this small town and hadn’t made a friend

Soon they fell to talking and their stories tumbled free
They had a lot in common but they lived so differently
But nothing came between them when she looked in his brown eyes
And so she made him promise when the time came for goodbyes:

“I might not see you for a while so I pledge to you today
I’ll remember everything that we had to say
And just so you know that what I swear is true:
I promise never to forget to remember you.”

Time passes like it does, full of sorrow and of cheer
That little girl and little boy met again in freshman year
She was walking to her class with books up to her chin
He caught her eye and took a breath and then he dove right in

He said, “I’d know that pretty face no matter where I am”
And they spent the next four years walking hand in hand
Until the day of misery when college plans were done
He renewed his promise as he headed for the rising sun:

“I might not see you for a while so I pledge to you today
I’ll remember everything that we had to say
And just so you know that what I swear is true:
I promise never to forget to remember you.”

They both grew up so quickly as the many years sped by
She stuck to his memory, no matter who the guy
She prayed and waited for the day when her true love would return
Her loyalty never faded and her candle always burned

Until the day she saw him at a little French café
She recognized his brown eyes beneath his black beret
She went over to his table and talked for a short while
But she couldn’t even conjure up one tiny little smile

So she left a napkin note with him and walked away in grief
He unfolded it and noticed that it was very brief
The handwriting upon it looked like something he had known
This is what he read as he sat there all alone:

“I watched you all today and I won’t believe a lie
I know you wanted me to leave when you tried to say goodbye
Just one look in your brown eyes and even I can see:
Even after all we said, you forgot to remember me.”
