adults don't know Us
by Leah Garrison (Age: 20)

Contest Winner

Age Rating: 13 to 127

Looking down from lofty statures
Down the length of upturned noses –
You can’t see us.

A teen cries out, but no one minds
“They’re too young to know”
You don’t believe us.

Stress from work and bills unpaid
Marriage, divorce, and death –
You think you alone are affected.

We live with you yet without you
Just another fixture in the house
Like a sofa the old owner rejected.

“Childhood is happiness”
“Why don’t you smile?”
Why can’t you see?

“You used to be so happy”
We used to be little innocents –
Growing up has its fee.

The fallen, the stray, the forgotten
The “good kids,” the fortresses
The ones whose futures seem so bright.

Depression and euphoria
Suicide and pregnancy
Our surface is black and white.

Passions flow and logic ebbs
Hormones magnify emotions
More colors than oil on water.

Brushed aside like so much lint
Patronized beyond all bearing
You contribute to the slaughter.

We love – you have forgotten.
We sing – you cannot hear.
We despair – you do not know.

This is a very good write and hits hard. But I think you are painting all adults with the same brush. Adults do remember what it was like growing up. I suppose some get so involved in their own problems, it appears that they have forgotten, but they haven't. But they do need to pay more attention to those younger ones in their care. It is the adults responsibility to nuture, listen, comfort and understand.
ADULTS: take notice. You have a responsibility.

Hi Leah,

Congratulations for winning my contest. It was a very well-written free-style poem. It had a nice rhythmical musical quality about it.

The sentiments were beautiful and very well expressed.

I must read your other Pieces. You have made me a
fan.

Congratulations again and
Thank You,

Rich

This one really takes the cake...It has everything that I would have expected from the title in it. Very great write.

Leah, your poem crosses ethnic, social, and religious lines to tell of universal teen-age truths. Your words jolt the adult reader into paying attention to those they have forgotten. Fantastic write.

Leah,
So many times my parents have told me "It gets worse after this," as if that is meant to make me smile and say "Hey! My misery isn't that bad." It seems they compare us to them, when we're still us, and therefor they expect us to grow so much faster. You havedone a magnificent job in portraying this, and I can't help but hope that I will be different if/when I have my own children. Great job, Leah.

(Or, in the words of a Steffie....PINEAPPLE!!!!!!!)

Forever,
Debra

This is really excellent Leah. If only all adults could read this, if only children, when they grow up, don't lose sight of this...

Leah, this is a marvel! I can't believe so few have read this! The realism of it is just outstanding!! This hits and hits hard, a lot more adults should really read this, and hopefully get the message that the would doesn't revolve around them and they're not the only ones with problems! Brilliant write! I seriously suggest you feature it, or try to get it published or something people definitely need to read this!

Great poem. To me this poem is true when we get older we are basically forgoton but there are some adults who are not like that. But some are.
