Jane paced back and forth in her office, looking at her watch repeatedly.
She should have been here well over an hour ago, she thought. What could have happened?
She looked outside her window before her heart dropped to her stomach. Could Kaitlin have changed her mind? As sad as that was, it was a definite possibility. Most women in her situation did. Jane hoped that Kaitlin was an exception.
Suddenly, the phone rang, causing her to jump.
Jane reached for it. "Hello, Kaitlin?" she asked, hopefully.
"No, unfortunately, she's in no condition to speak right now."
Jane frowned. "David Kobliski?"
"Hardly. If anything, I've encouraged him to turn himself in to the authorities."
Jane frowned. "This is Kaitlin's stalker, isn't it?"
"If I have given everyone the impression that I am a stalker, I apologize. I have never intended to put her life in danger." The man's voice took on an impatient tone. "If I did, I wouldn't have brought her to the hospital. Why don't you go and see for yourself?"
With that, the line went dead.
Great, Jane thought. I had just scared him off.
Knowing she had no choice but to take the caller's word, she prepared to leave for the hospital.

Lucien closed the phone after he had finished calling Jane. He didn't mean to get impatient with her, but he was sick of being accused of a crime he wasn't intentionally doing.
He was now sitting in the waiting room, his elbows resting in his hands. He felt defeated; he should have sensed that lowlife's presence. Instead, he allowed himself to get distracted enough for Kaitlin to get hurt.
Lucien sighed, knowing that this was just the tip of the iceberg for her.
"Lucien?"
Lucien looked up and saw John before he rose to his feet. "John--."
"I know you told me not to come, but I couldn't stay away." He hesitated. "Any word yet about her condition?"
"No, not yet. As far as I know, they're still examining her."
"Mr. DeNieux?"
"Yes, that's me," Lucien spoke up.
A middle-aged woman in a doctor's suit approached him. "As far as I can tell, she'll be fine."
Lucien frowned. "As far as you can tell? What does that mean?"
"We needed some extra time to examine her more closely. We had discovered that she might have a condition that is foreign to us. We need to keep her here for further observation."
"I . . . I don't understand," Lucien whispered, although he knew fully well what she meant.
"I'm afraid I won't be able to explain any further at the moment," she said. "You're just going to have to wait and see."
The doctor then turned and walked away.
It's starting, Lucien thought. It's starting.
May God have mercy on us all.
