The Chosen
Chapter 10
by Natalie Amaral
copyright 08-28-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

Jane had stepped into the hospital and walked up to the front counter. "Excuse me," she said to the nurse, "could you please tell me if a Kaitlin Smith is here?"

"Are you a friend or a relative?"

Jane held out her identification. "Would this be sufficient? She's a client."

The nurse stared at her for a long moment before she turned to the computer. The nurse then turned to face her. "She's in room 21B--just around the corner."

"Thank you."

Jane turned and walked on ahead, only to be surprised by John walking towards her.

"How--?" Jane began.

"I was visiting a friend. I had heard about Kaitlin Smith. The whole thing was already on the news."

"He hasn't seriously hurt her. It appears some stranger was there to help her just in time before he brought her here. I'm not sure if he's some vigilante or someone who was there at the right place at the right time."

"Or someone else," Jane muttered.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

Jane told John about the phone call she recieved.

John frowned. "Well, Kaitlin's here, she's alive. Apparently, he may not mean her any harm."

"What makes you think that?"

"Why would he bring her here if he did and risk getting reported?"

Jane nodded, seeing his point.

"Do you wish to see her?"

"Um, yeah. I was on my way there now."

"Very well. Let's go."

***

Lucien sat by Kaitlin's bedside, holding her hand. She was still unconscious, but he was already able to see the changes in her. Her skin and lips were much paler than usual. Most of the others will mistake it as a result of her ordeal, but Lucien knew better. He knew because he had experienced those kind of symptoms himself. As a result, he had been forced to live as the creature he was today.

Now, this poor creature would go through the same thing. . .

"Excuse me, Sir."

Lucien quickly rose to his feet. "Yes."

Lucien was confronted by a blonde woman and John. She revealed her identification. "I'm a private investigator. I'm here to ask her some questions."

Lucien nodded. "I spoke to you on the phone."

The woman frowned. "Then I guess I owe you an apology after all. I wasn't sure if I'd find Miss. Smith here. You see, she did tell me that she changed her mind about you, but--."

"You were being cautious. I understand." Lucien wiped his eyes as he did his best to keep his composure. "I . . . I must go."

Lucien quickly quickly ran out of the room.

John turned to Jane. "I'll go and speak with him."

Jane nodded as she watched John approach Lucien and frowned. From the looks of it, they appeared to be much closer than she thought.

***

"Lucien," John muttered as he approached the vampire, "you must calm down."

Lucien turned to John. "How can I? She's going through the same transformation I went through. The main difference with her is that she doesn't know it."

"Neither did you until the last minute. But don't lose control; not now. It's not the place nor the time."

Lucien slowly nodded as a blood-red tear streamed down his cheek.

This is very well done. I love the touch of blood stain tear. I can "see" the action as I read this. Loving it very much!

I'm so curious to see what you have in store for Kaitlin.
