“…I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.” Exodus 20:5b-6 (NIV)
How my family has struggled
Aching under the burdens
Of the sins of our fathers,
Our mothers, or theirs before.
Their legacy of suffering
Bearing down upon us all
And each of us choosing again
For ourselves and our children
To repeat our families’ errors
Turning backs on God’s grace
Calling down upon ourselves
And our children’s children
The punishment we deserve
But cannot, ourselves, bear
It need not be this way
God longs for so much more
Something so much better
Even than the very best
Any of us could ever imagine
Blessings instead of curses
And if His anger lasts a night,
Joy truly comes in the morning
For His blessings are for longer
A thousand generations blessed
For the faithful loving obedience
Of just one who honors God
And teaches those who come after
To do the same thing themselves.
I will change my family
Choose obedience instead
Love God with everything
Teach those who come behind
To fall desperately in love
With a passionate savior
Who longs only to bless us
Who gave all He has in death
And triumphant resurrection
For this one thing alone:
To know His children fully
For them to know Him
And have a relationship
Which is the truest blessing.

This poem really moves me. I know that in the past couple of years, I've had a hard time showing my love for god. It wasn't until I joined the military and went through Basic Military Training that I was able to really feel him there with me, and be able to show more feelings towards him. I hope to be able to read more works like this from you when I get the chance to :)
I think that most people are afraid to openly show love for God. The general public may see them as Bible Thumpers, or some other names. So most will hide thier beliefs except on Sunday. Its to bad that people are stereotyped when each and every person is an individual.Though you may share some ideals, with some people, it certainly does not mean you share them all.Thank you for this, Anthony
