Problems of the Heart
Chapter 11
by Sam Hackel-Butt (Age: 19)
copyright 05-24-2004

Age Rating: 13 to 127

“Elizabeth!” Donovan called out through his bedroom door. A laughing Elizabeth was hidden in a broom closet a floor below, and still she could hear his cry of rage. She stuffed her fist in her mouth to keep her giggles under control. But she was failing. She had put a dead rat in his bed, right under the blankets. When she had found it, it was swarming with flies, and lying in a pool of sewer water. Father was going to punish her again, but she couldn’t help it. Donovan was the only one she could pester, as the servants had work. But because of the three year age difference, he had “more mature things to do then to run around with a scrawny 13 year old,” as he has once said to her. She was not scrawny, just tall, like father.

Suddenly the closet door opened, and Michael stood in the entrance.
“I thought you would of found a different hiding place after the last dozen dead rodents, Elizabeth.”
He grabbed her arm, and pulled her out of the closet. Her mother was standing behind her father, hands on her hips. She still looked the same as she did the day of the accident, except that the bruises were gone.
“Elizabeth, stop pestering your brother. You know he has important things to do before the end of the year!”
“Yea, like chasing after everything with breasts,” she said seriously. “He sneaks out every other night to see a different girl! And whenever I want some time outside of the place, I get told off.”
”Elizabeth, he has work to do. He’s very bright for a sixteen year old. He has potential to be the world next greatest-“ Michael began.
”Yea, yea. World next greatest leader. Why can’t I be leader?” Elizabeth interrupted.
“Because woman aren’t what the city wants,” Ariel answered. “Now go upstairs, clean your brothers bed, and then go to your room. I’m sending Melanie to supervise you, so don’t try anything.”
She groaned. Not Melanie! Melanie was the meanest servant in the estate. One time, when she was young, Melanie would come into her room at five in the morning, wake her up, pull her out of bed just so she could stand outside while her father left for a meeting. When she complained about Donovan sleeping, Melanie just snapped, and said that Donovan had no manners. She had also said: “Elizabeth, I’m going to make you a lady. See? Your mother is up early as well. You have a future ahead of you if you use that head of yours.”

Always use that head of yours, she drilled and drilled until Elizabeth could hear it in her sleep.
“Yes mother,” Elizabeth said, sulkily.
“Now go.”
And she did. She slowly climbed the stairs, stalling as much as possible, but succeeded to receive a light slap to the behind. When she got to her brothers room, he was standing in front of his room, arms crossed over his chest.
“Are you really that dumb, or do you just do it to fool us?” He teased.
She glared at him, and gave him a slight push. He laughed, obviously amused.
“Clean the bed, Elizabeth. You heard mother,” he teased again.
She walked into the room just to have something fly into her face. She screamed, which caused Donovan to cover his ears, and the person in the room to tackle her to the floor. Still screaming, the person covered her mouth. Panicking, she bit his hand, and slipped away, ran to the window and jumped onto the balcony on the floor below her.

Thank god she was so good at jumping and climbing. She looked up once she was settled, and she cursed. Donovan, and his friend Aaron’s heads were both out the window, eyes shut, and roaring with laughter.
She swore again, stamped her foot, and went to the farthest end of the balcony
“ELIZABETH!” A shrill voice called from the balcony door. Donovan and Aaron stopped laughing, mouthed obscene words to Elizabeth before retreating into the room.
“Elizabeth!” The voice called again.
“Good afternoon, grandmother.”
“Good afternoon indeed,” she said crossly. “Why is there so much screaming? What have you done again?”
”I didn’t do anything! It’s Donovan and Aaron who-“
”Don’t raise your voice at me!” she yelled, and gave Elizabeth’s shins a whack with her cane. While she was rubbing her knee’s, Greta gave her another whack on her back, causing her to fall to the ground.
“I’m sorry, grandmother,” Elizabeth said, almost at tears. “It won’t happened again.”
”It better not.” While Greta scolded Elizabeth, Elizabeth decided she didn’t want to hear it anymore, so she quickly got to her feet.
“I never told you to get up,” Greta yelled again, and made an effort to hit Elizabeth again, but Elizabeth ran to the balcony’s edge and jumped onto the railing.
“What are you doing? Get down from there!” She cried, slowly making her way to Elizabeth.
Elizabeth knew she could make the jump. She’s done it before. But that was in winter when the snow was piled high. Now, there was only grass. She glanced behind her at her grandmother swinging a cane angrily. Then she heard Aaron and Donovan’s laughter. She stood up, furious, and jumped off.
Her grandmother screamed, and Donovan and Aaron gasped.

Air rushed past her, causing her blonde hair to flail out behind her, and shirt to un-tuck from her slacks, and unbutton.
“Watch out!” She yelled, as someone stepped out right underneath her.
It was too late. She had fallen on him, and they both fell to the ground in a mass tangle of arms and legs.

When her head had stopped spinning from the collision, she jumped back, because she remembered she had dropped on someone.

“I’m so sorry!” She said, pressing her hands against her cheeks.
“The hell you’re sorry you could of-“ But he fell short, as her revealed bra caught his eye.
“Are you alright?” She asked, bending over slightly, offering her hand. He took it after observing her cleavage for a few seconds, and then almost regretted getting up as when he stood up, her blouse covered her.
“I’m fine. Just fine… Hey, I think something fell with you when you crashed down,” he said with a stupid grin, feeling that she was dumb enough to bend over again.

Whack!
“You pervert,” she muttered as she turned her back on him, buttoning her blouse again, then making her way to the front door. Donovan was standing at the door, and didn’t bother Elizabeth as she stomped away.

“Something fell,” mocked Donovan, bending over dramatically.
“Shove it, Don.”
“Make me, Jack.”
Jack sighed. “And you’re supposed to be leader in a few years? What a joke,” he teased, throwing in a few chuckles.
“Just get upstairs. Aaron’s waiting.”

When they reached the floor Donovan’s room was on, it was to Elizabeth holding Aaron down, pressing his arm painfully behind his back. Her knee was also pressed against his back, and seemed to be digging into his skin.

“Get off!” Donovan cried, running over and pulling his sister off of Aaron.
“Haven’t you gotten into enough trouble today? Just wait until mother hears you jumped from grandmother’s balcony again.”
She pulled away from him, and just walked away.
“Answer me when I talk to you,” he said angrily, tossing a ball of energy at her.
She quickly whipped around, and caught it in her hand.
“You seem to forget I’m stronger then you, Donovan,” She said fiercely, whipping it back at him. All three boys ducked as it hit the ceiling, making plaster and rock cascade over them.

When they looked up, she was gone.

“I don’t know why you keep bothering her,” Jack said to Donovan as soon as they were in his room. Donovan was pacing.
“Because she’s my little sister. I have to make life tough on her. It’s my job.”
”I thought your job was to study to be Leader,” mumbled Aaron from his place at the table. Jack sat next to him, and popped a candy into his mouth from the little dish in the center of the table.
“Yes. Leader is your fate. So why do you concern yourself with Elizabeth?” Jack said between chews.

Donovan sat himself across from his two friends.
“Just deal the cards,” he snapped, and placed a deck of cards on the table.
